Brazilian sawmills improve performance (13 March, 2012)

Brazilian sawmills posted a better performance in 2011 than in the previous year, according to Wood Resources International.

Lumber exports were up 6% to their highest levels in three years, with shipments to China, Saudia Arabia, Mexico and Morocco increasing the most.

Sawlog prices trended upwards, reaching an all-time high in the second quarter before a fall in the second half (for prices in US dollars).

Domestic demand is expected to continue to improve in 2012, due to construction in advance of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
