Austria: restraint in cutting activity 23/02/2013
Even in mid-February, most Austrian sawmilling businesses are still producing at a slightly reduced level for the time of year. Most businesses are running cutting operations in one and a half to two shifts on four to five days per week and are thus fully dispensing with weekend working. According to information from producers, there are too few cutting orders and the supply of logs to many businesses is being described as tense. In view of the weak market signals to date, market observers are not expecting any significant upswing in the Austrian sawmilling industry’s cutting activity for a number of weeks to come. Building activity has come to a halt on all the central and western European sales markets for weather reasons, which is ultimately part of the reason why demand is slack for standard-dimensions and reserve construction timber.
